News story that aired February 12, 2008 gives an overview of the work Restorative Justice Community Action is doing to address livability crimes in a way that's tough on crime yet rehabilitative. Offenders who commit livability crimes often have to pay a fine in the traditional criminal justice system. However, those that opt to go through Restorative Justice Community Action's program meet face-to-face with community members affected by the crime, often do community service in the neighborhood where they committed the crime, write letters of apology, and may donate monetary or in-kind donations. Offenders who complete the program have a much lower recidivism rate than those who go through the criminal justice system.
